Shaft boots; they are often beautiful. But sometimes they are difficult to get. Do you want to wear your beautiful boots often, or do you have a pair of shaft boots that stay in the closet because they are so difficult to put on? We would like to tell you everything about these boots and share our tips with you!
What is a shaft boot?
A shaft boot is a boot without a zipper. It is therefore important that this boot has a passage, also called the shaft, where you can easily put your foot in and where your calf sits comfortably. The shaft is the upper part of the boot, from the ankle to the top. This can be a high boot, but also a ankle boot. Sometimes it can be difficult to get your foot in this boot while the boot is the right size. Fortunately, there are a few tricks to make shaft boots easier to put on.
How do you measure your shaft size?
First of all, it is important to know your shaft size. For this you measure the shaft height and the shaft width. Use a flexible tape measure for this, it works the best. Measure the shaft height from the top of the heel to the highest point of your boot. The height of the heel does not matter in this case!
Now that we know the shaft height, it's time for the shaft width, or circumference. Measure the widest part of the boot and both calves. That way you know for sure if the shaft boot fits or not. With a short boot, this is often the top, but with a high boot, this point is often around the calves. The material of the boot is also determining. When you have an elastic fabric, your calf automatically has more room because the fabric stretches. It is best to measure this with a leather boot without lining. Because lining also causes a different shaft width.
When you know the shaft height and width, it is much easier to buy a shaft boot! At Shabbies Amsterdam, we always mention the height and width of all boots, making it easier to estimate whether the boots will fit you.

TIPS for your shaft boot
Found shaft boots? Great! Trouble putting them on? No problem! There are fortunately some tricks to get into your beautiful boots. We would of course like to share them with you!

TIP 1: Shoe spoon
Do you have a shoe spoon at home? Great! If you don't have one, it's time to buy one, because with a shoe spoon you can often get a shaft boot much easier! You place the shoe spoon in the shoe, so the spoon acts as a lever to help you get your foot into the boot more easily.
TIP 2: Sandwich bag or pedal bin bag
A sandwich bag? Yes, definitely! With a simple plastic sandwich or pedal bin bag, you can easily get into your shaft boots! During the first few times of wear, our tip is to put on the boots using a plastic bag. Place the bag under your foot when you want to slide into the boot, and pull the bag out from under your foot when you are in the boot. Can't do this? You can always put the entire bag around your foot, but then you won't be able to get the bag out of the boot when you are in the boot. Keep that in mind! This won't be a disaster for the first few times, but eventually it should be possible without a bag.
Leather boots stretch out
The characteristic of leather is that it molds to the shape of your foot as you wear the boots more often. If the shoe presses a bit on your instep, this will decrease over time. However, if they feel very tight, you probably need a larger size. The most important thing is that your toes have enough room at the front. If you are between sizes, a larger size with an insole might be the best solution. So, be patient and take good care of these beautiful boots. They are stunning, but they require just that little bit of extra attention!
Loose boot
A characteristic of a well-fitting and comfortable shaft boot is that, once it is well worn in, it can become a bit looser around the foot and feel like 'slippers'. This is an important detail that is typical of the shaft boot and is therefore not strange. You need this space to get into a shaft boot with your foot, which is not necessary with a tight ankle boot with a zipper. Keep this in mind when purchasing your new shaft boots!
